At Directhitt, we’ve been taking on complex and environmentally sensitive horizontal directional drilling projects across Australia since 1995. To complete our sustainable and cost-effective drilling solutions, we maintain a range of innovative equipment including mud drilling pumps. Mud pumps are a fundamental piece of equipment for successful drilling operations, especially on directional drilling projects. Learn more about mud pumps below or ask our team today about hiring one for your next project.
A mud pump is used to circulate drilling mud (also referred to as drilling fluid) down hole during drilling operations. The drilling mud is pumped down hole up to pressures of 7,500 PSI (up to 1,600 PSI for HDD) through the drill string. It returns back to the surface via the bore's annulus. The drilling mud circulation process performs numerous critical functions which include cooling the drill bit and SONDE, cleaning the bore of drill cuttings, providing hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluid from entering the bore, and exerting pressure to help prevent bore hole collapse. Considering these essential functions, mud pumps are often referred to as the heart of the rig.
A mud pump is a reciprocating type pump that works by drawing fluid into a cylinder through a piston or plunger which then pushes that liquid into the desired direction through one-way or check valves. The result of this process is a pulsed flow of liquid in one direction. Smoother liquid flow can be achieved by gathering multiple pumps together to increase pump efficiency. The mud pump is designed to force drilling fluids under high pressure down the drill string and back up the annulus.
At Directhitt, we can provide a range of mud pumps with abilities to pump from 218 gallons per minute up to 800 gallons per minute. Our range includes:
